Background

The swyMed™ Video-Enabled Ambulance provides intuitive, click to call connections between EMS crews responding to 911 calls and specialists at local hospitals or tertiary care centers.

swyMed requires continuous and reliable network connectivity to deliver their SaaS-based software solutions in ambulances serving as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), Mobile Stroke Units (MSU), Critical Care Transport Units (CCTU) and Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU).

The Problem

 swyMed’s telemedicine video technology is dependent on high quality network connections to deliver their life-saving telemedicine services. swyMed was having challenges establishing a reliable connection between their carrier, Verizon Wireless, and their applications running on Microsoft Azure.

Unanticipated performance and connectivity issues are common when connecting any network service provider to a cloud provider through a complex cloud data center. The logical connectivity, circuit definitions, meet point assignments, and BGP routing must all be configured properly within the cloud data center for the connections to work properly. Applications requiring wireless connections add even more complexity.

This is common because network service providers understand networking but often don’t understand the complex routing within cloud data centers and peering points. Conversely, cloud service providers typically don’t understand the intricacies of networking. The interconnecting points within the cloud data center is where things most often break down. swyMed worked for months attempting to establish reliable network connections without success. Knowing Lightstream’s expertise with cloud-carrier interconnections, Verizon Wireless reached out to Lightstream to help solve swyMed’s challenges.

swyMed™ Video-Enabled Ambulance provides intuitive, click-to-call connections between EMS crews responding to 911 calls and specialists at local hospitals or tertiary care centers. Lightstream was able to solve the interconnection problems between the carriers and swyMed’s applications running in Azure.

Solution

The proposed solution included a direct connection to swyMed’s applications running in Azure using Azure ExpressRoute, and Verizon Secure Cloud Interconnect (SCI), a private IP network from Verizon Wireless into Azure to improve network security, availability, performance and reliability. Even with these connections, the network was not yet performing properly.

Lightstream was able properly configure the logical connectivity, meet point assignments, BGP routing, circuit definitions, VNet/Subnet architecture, and failover configurations in one day, resolving the connectivity issues, and enabling swyMed’s mobile software solution to reliably treat and monitor patients from anywhere through real-time audio and video.
